WHAT IS INTEGRATIVE BREATHING THERAPY?
Originally developed by Dr. Rosalba Courtney DO, PhD, Integrative Breathing Therapy (IBT) is comprehensive evidence based and individualised approach to breathing retraining and breathing therapy. It is an evolving therapy and its development is built on the integration of scientific evidence, critical thinking and the accumulated and shared experience of IBT practitioners.
A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH
IBT works with all parts of the unified breathing system including the upper and lower airway and the 3 dimensions of breathing i.e. the psychological, biochemical and biomechanical dimensions.
IBT recognises that breathing is a system made up of functionally and neurologically linked parts such as the nose, upper airway, thorax and diaphragm. It recognises that breathing has many primary and secondary functions with the potential to heal via a range of mechanisms. Assessment and treatment of all dimensions of breathing and various parts of the breathing system may be necessary for ideal treatment outcomes.
‘Healing the Breath’ and ‘Healing with the Breath’
Integrative breathing therapy assists individuals with dysfunctional breathing to improve their breathing. In individuals without dysfunctional breathing, breathing techniques used in conjunction with other strategies to improve physical and psychological health or specific goals such as improved sports performance.
Individualised Person Centred
IBT is person centred rather than therapy centred. Breathing techniques are chosen and adapted to suit a person’s condition and circumstances on the basis of history and assessments. Individualised treatment is not only about finding the correct breathing technique. It’s also about supporting the persons health and healing process in whatever ways are necessary using techniques within an IBT practitioners scope of practice and referring appropriately when necessary.
